Cambil is a municipality in the Sierra Mágina region, an environmentally privileged place, located in the heart of Sierra Mágina, it has a total extension of 140 km2, of which 3,454 hectares belong to the natural park: 25.34%, being municipality with the largest territorial extension.
The first archaeological remains that appear on the town belong to the Neolithic, the Bronze Age (II millennium BC) and in the written sources, reference is made for the first time to the Roman city of Vergilia, (Arbuniel), although currently it has been found a Chalcolithic site in the area of El Banco de Arbuniel.
We also have some traces of a specimen of Brachychirotherium gallicum, a reptile from the Triassic, from about 225 million years ago, before the great dinosaurs. Currently these footprints can be visited in the Science Park of Granada, although we have a replica in the municipality of Cambil itself.
During the Muslim period Cambil was known as Qanbil and Al-Wahhab”, in the hands of the Nasrids, it ended up in the possession of the Catholic Monarchs during the Reconquest on September 22, 1485. Cambil and Alhabar, an ancient battlefield between the knights of the cross and the horsemen of the crescent, has numerous stories of fights and battles.
Both in Cambil and in Arbuniel we find remains of Castles, Castle of Cambil, Alhabar, the Castillejo in Cambil and fortresses such as the Torre Gallarín or the Castellón in Arbuniel that demonstrate the wealth and splendor of the town during the Muslim era, let us remember that it was a bordering the Nasrid kingdom of Granada and therefore an area of special interest for Christians during the Reconquest, a time when it passed into Christian hands several times until its final conquest in 1485.
Among the many remains and monuments it has, the Mannerist-style Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, from the 16th century, stands out. Inside we find a polychrome wooden altarpiece by Sebastián de Solís. In this same church the image of the patron saint El Santísimo Cristo de El Mármol is venerated.
We can walk along its hiking trails, visit wonderful places, water springs (the Arbuniel one stands out, within the municipality itself), fountains, watering holes, washing places, archaeological remains...
